Sonia Benavidez was born on July 26, 1960 in Mathis, Texas to parents Ventura G. Benavidez and Esperanza S. Benavidez.  Sonia was called home by the Lord during the early morning hours on June 10, 2025 after a lengthy illness.  Sonia worked as a registered nurse in Driscoll Children's Hospital in various departments.  Sonia truly enjoyed caring for children. Sonia graduated from Odem High School in 1979 and attended Del Mar College where she attained her AS as a Registered Nurse. Sonia enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters, Kylah and Selene; and going to the Frio was a must during the summer.  Sonia loved animals.  She had fish, chickens, birds, and many cats and dogs throughout her lifetime.

Sonia is preceded in death by her father, Ventura G. Benavidez.  Sonia is survived by her mother, Esperanza S. Benavidez; sisters, Noemi  (Adrian) Perez and Criselda Benavidez; and her brother, Dalio (Diana) Benavidez. Sonia also leaves behind two of her pet dogs, Cooper and her precious Charlie; an adopted son, Raul Barrera; and her nephews, Diego, Dalio Jr., Mathew, and Tommy, whom she spoiled, and her great-niece Madison.  Aunt Sonia gave some of the best hugs.  She also leaves behind her beloved cousins, especially Gracie, Severa, Lucy, and Mario, who always made her laugh.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 from 3 p.m. to

9 p.m. with a holy rosary being recited at 7 p.m.  A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Edroy.  Interment will follow at Edroy Cemetery in Edroy.
